Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third daughter in their family. At the age of five the father was a carnival barker which left Ruth's mother no option but to work as a cleaning woman and waitress to support her family. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. She only attended the school for two years, before going on to pursue an acting profession. This path was fraught with challenges. After obtaining a position at New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to secure jobs for stage. Then, after a time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back to her home in Massachusetts and leave her position. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first acting position that was permanent. She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
