Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. When her father passed away as a Carnival barker at the age of an infant, she had to help support the family working both as a cleaner and a server. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. She only attended the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting career. Her path to success turned out be strewn with obstacles such as in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills in a magazine for crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. The following job she got was an "hat check" woman at a nightclub before she gave up and returned to Boston. In Boston, when she worked at night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time, was an usherette. In addition, she was a drama student and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
