Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a Carnival barker when Ruth was just a young girl, she had to help provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth attended school, and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. Her school was closed in two short years to pursue acting. The path she chose to take turned out to be filled with challenges such as In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a magazine about crime, but theatrical work eluded her. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at a night club before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. In Boston, where she worked during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time she was an usherette. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
