Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a Carnival barker at the age of a young girl, she had to help support the family working both as a cleaner and a server. Ruth went to school in Boston's poorest tenement area. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting profession. This was not an easy path to follow. While she was offered an opportunity in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine, no theatre jobs were offered to her. After that, she was an hat-checker at the nightclub before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. The city of Boston was when she worked at late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time, was an usherette. Drama studies led her to receive a degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
