Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Ruth was born in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts in which she went to the school. Following only two school years the young woman left to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines, the theatre work that she wanted eluded. The following job she got was an "hat check" girl for a nightclub but she quit and relocated to Boston. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first ever permanent acting job. Her studies in drama led her to graduate from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
