Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a toddler when her father who was employed as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth attended school, and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. In the midst of only two years in school, Ruth left to pursue an acting career. The route she took wasn't without its challenges. When she was in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines. acting work she wanted eluded. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home to the United States and quit her position. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first acting position that was permanent. She studied drama in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
