Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father died, which caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as an attendant or cleaner in order for them to remain alive. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts in which she went to high school. But she quit school only after two years of school to pursue an acting career. The route she took wasn't without its challenges. In New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills in crime magazines. acting work she longed to do was abyssal. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. There she was able to earn a living working as an usherette during the during the day and then at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. Her studies in drama led her to graduate at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
