Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. At the age of five the father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning woman and waitress to feed the family. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student in the area. She left school after two years, to go into acting. The path she chose to take turned out to be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained a job posing for stills in a magazine for crime However, the stage was not a match for her. When she was employed as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. She made the ends meet by working with her ushering duties in the morning, while in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
