Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father's death as a carnival barker, at the age of an infant, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth grew up in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She only attended school for two years before going on to pursue an acting career. This was not an easy path to follow. Although she got a job in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs came her way. Following a short time as a club hat girl, she decided to return home and quit the job she was working in. She worked as an usherette during the day and then appeared at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first ever permanent acting job. She also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
