Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. At the age of five, her carnival barker father passed away which left Ruth's mother without a choice other than to be a cleaning lady and waitress in order to support her family. Ruth was a student at the school located in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. The institution she was in after only two years to pursue acting as a profession. It was not without difficulties. After landing a gig in New York as a model for a detective magazine she was unable to secure jobs for stage. Then in NYC, she was employed at a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting before moving to Boston. There she earned a living as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. She studied drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
