Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. At the age of five, her father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother no option but to become a cleaner girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She left school after two years, to go into acting. It was a difficult path to pursue. Although she got an interview at a theatre in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. Following a short time as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. In the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. She earned money by working during the day working as an Usherette. She was a drama student at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
