Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, was killed as a young child, forcing her mother to support her family through work as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth was raised in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. But she only stayed in the school for two years, before leaving to pursue her acting profession. The path was difficult to follow. Even though she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs came her way. Then in NYC, she volunteered at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning and moving back to Boston. In Boston, when she worked at evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time as an usherette. She also studied drama and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
