Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. When she was young her carnival barker father passed away which left Ruth's mother without a choice other than to be a cleaning lady and waitress in order to feed the family. Ruth went to school in Boston's poorest tenement area. She left school after two years, to go into acting. It was a difficult path to pursue. Even though she got an interview in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs was offered. The following job she got was a "hat check" lady at a club but she quit and relocated to Boston. She made ends meet by working as an usher throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. Drama studies led her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
