Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just an infant She was required to support the family working both as a maid and server. Ruth attended school, and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. But she only stayed in the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting profession. It was a difficult path to follow. While she was offered an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs was offered. Then, after a period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back home to the United States and quit her position. As an usherette, she worked in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first permanent acting gig. In addition, she was a drama student and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
