Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third child of the family. The young woman was just a teenager when her father who was the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother was forced to perform tasks including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth attended the school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She left the school after just two years of school to explore a career in acting. It was a difficult path to follow. While she was offered an interview in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs was offered. After a brief time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home to the United States and quit her job. She made enough money with her ushering duties in the morning, while in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
