Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third child of the family. As a young girl the carnival barker father passed away and left her mother no option but to become a cleaner woman and waitress to feed the family. Ruth attended the school in Boston's poorest tenement area. In the midst of only two years in school she left for the acting career. Her chosen path proved to be fraught with difficulties such as in New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a crime magazine However, the stage was not a match for her. Then, after a time as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home and quit her position. In Boston, she made a buck in the ushering industry during the during the day and then at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. Her studies in drama led her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
