Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away as a carnival barker, as a little girl She was required to support the family working both as a cook and server. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She was a student in Boston. However, she was only in the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting career. This path was fraught with challenges. After landing a gig in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she found it difficult to find jobs for stage. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back to her home in Massachusetts and leave her position. It was there that she earned a living working as an usherette during the in the daytime, while at night she performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. She completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
