Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father, a carnival barker, was killed at the age of a tiny girl, requiring her mother to support the family by being a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student in Boston. She left school after two short years to pursue acting. Her path was not without obstacles. In New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. After that, she was the hat checker in an evening club, before deciding to call it quits and returning to Boston. She made enough money with her ushering duties throughout the day, and at night performing in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She graduated with a diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
