Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn located in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, died as a young girl, requiring her mother to support the family by being an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. However, she was only in school for two years before leaving to pursue her acting career. Her journey was not without obstacles. her path to success. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine, but no theatrical jobs were forthcoming. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. She worked as an usherette in the mornings and performed at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first ever permanent acting job. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
