Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who worked as an carnival barker, died. Her mother was forced to take on jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She attended school there. She left school after two short years to pursue acting. The route she took did not come without challenges. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. Then in NYC, she volunteered at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting and moving back to Boston. In Boston, when she worked at night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time as an usherette. The study of drama helped her to earn her degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
