Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third child of the family. After her father died as a Carnival barker as a young girl She was required to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. She left the school only after two years in order to take on a acting career. This path was fraught with difficulties. When she was offered a job in New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to get jobs in the stage. While in New York, she worked in a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting before moving to Boston. She was in Boston when she worked at evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time, was an usherette. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
